iTwin Undertaking
Transform infrastructure plans into immersive experiences
A new way to explore projects before their construction
Imagine you can walk on a bridge before even one beam is laid, see the sunlight reflected on steel, or lean over the railing to look at the river below. With iTwin UndertakingThis becomes possible.
Bentley Systems presented this new tool at the conference Year in Infrastructure and Going Digital Awards (YII) Amsterdam. This software transforms infrastructure models — bridges, tunnels, power plants — simple 3D designs in immersive real-time experiments.
The objective is not the simple spectacular, but rather the facilitate communication and decision-making : teams and stakeholders can see a project as if they were inside the future they are building.
Engineering data + fast streaming + high quality rendering
The key innovation of iTwin Engage comes from the combination of several technologies :
iTwin – Bentley's open cloud platform for digital twins,
3D Tiles – open standard for streaming large volumes of data,
Unreal Engine – high-end graphics engine (used in games like Fortnite).
This combination allows load data quickly and producing high quality real-time visuals, without waiting for minutes (or hours) for model optimizations.
The experience is based on three key actions:
➡️ Explore project data,
➡️ Improve scene with lighting, vegetation, traffic, etc.,
➡️ Present all in the form of an immersive narrative.

Democratizing access to digital twins
One of the most important aspects of Twin Engage is that opens the immersive experience to allNot just engineers.
Bentley distinguishes two types of users:
Directors and designers who prepare the scenes and narratives,
Consumers who do not need to master the technical details but simply wish living experience, such as municipal officials, citizen committees, or even the public.
No more need to go through static files or PowerPoint presentations: everyone can explore an immersion project via a web browser.
Simplicity of use and full integration
Bentley insists on simplicity: the tool manages complexity in the background, without the user having to export, reformat, or alternate between several software.
Once you have created your iTwin, you can use it through different phases — design, analysis and advanced visualization — without changing data source.
iTwin Engage also integrates into theBentley Ecosystem Infrastructure Cloud (including MicroStation, OpenRoads, SYNCHRO, etc.), which reduces the need to switch between incompatible tools.
Early access and user returns
iTwin Engage is available in early access (EAP) since March. Feedback from users shows a strong appreciation for its simplicity and one significant reduction in the time required to prepare visualizations.
A new way to communicate about infrastructure projects
For Bentley, this launch is more than just a product: it is an approach focused on solving concrete difficulties:
Better communication of projects,
Building consensus,
Facilitating decisions and securing financing.
By making information more accessible and immersive, Engage aims to eliminate friction understanding and collaboration around major infrastructure projects.
