MicroStation 2026: IA for infrastructure design

Bentley Systems just unveiled MicroStation 2026, a major update of its flagship design software. Displayed objective: to help engineering teams do more, faster, thanks to artificial intelligence and a 3D context directly from the real world. Here's what to remember from this new version.

MicroStation, Bentley Systems 2D/3D Design Base

For nearly four decades, MicroStation has been the foundation for all Bentley Systems infrastructure design solutions (OpenRoads, OpenBuildings, OpenPlant...). Used by engineers, architects and surveyors from all over the world, it allows to draw, model and document projects in both 2D and 3D, with a level of precision adapted to major infrastructure projects.

CAD/DAO remains at the heart of engineering and architecture.

MicroStation 2026: three main pillars

The 2026 version revolves around three axes: IA automation, immersive 3D context, and faster grip for new users.

Python Assistant and Bentley Copilot: IA in the automation department

The Python Assistant Now allows to generate, modify and correct automation scripts via a simple chatbot, without advanced programming skills. A task that used to take hours — as updating drawing standards on hundreds of files — can now be done in a few minutes. In addition, Bentley Copilot acts as an integrated assistant: new users can ask their questions in natural language and get answers step by step, which considerably reduces the time taken.

Designing in the real world: Google Maps and Cesium integration

MicroStation 2026 integrates high resolution data from Google Maps and Cesium to directly situate projects in their real environment. Simply enter an address to instantly find a site, and view over 350 million existing buildings and the surrounding land. What to check, before the first pick, how a new bridge or building will fit into its context.

3D BIM modeling of a building

3D modelling in real context facilitates the detection of conflicts upstream of the site.

Component Center 2.0 and enhanced 3D navigation

Component Center 2.0 offers a smarter cloud library to manage and reuse design components, ensuring consistency and compliance between projects. On the navigation side, a partnership with 3Dconnection improves the SpaceMouse experience in large 3D models, with new modes « Fly », « Walk » and « Drone » to facilitate visualization with stakeholders.
